Determining Your Focus and Setting Goals

Determining Your Focus and Setting Goals

Around here, we're really very serious about our goals. Personally and professionally, they guide us on a daily basis.

Think of goal setting as creating a roadmap for where you want your life to go. What's important to you? What do you want to focus on as you move forward? We LOVE setting goals and believe in aligning them to our overall focus and then breaking them down into smaller focus areas. As far as timing goes, we love to set our goals on an annual basis and then break them down quarterly, and again on a monthly basis.

Your Aspyn Planner and Wellness Workbook comes with a Welcome Guide and Goal Setting packet that includes annual and quarterly versions of the document below. You'll get a monthly goal-setting worksheets as part of your planner subscription. Ready to get started? Follow the steps below.

Determine Your Focus

Think of your focus as your North Star. It's the one thing that all your goals will align with. Maybe your focus is yourself, your family, or your career. Whatever it is, note it at the top of your goal sheet and make sure you reference it often. Your focus can change as you grow but will most likely stay the same for years at a time.

Break Down Your Goals on an Annual Basis

Below your overall focus, you'll notice callouts for each of the important areas of our lives. Pick one goal at a time for each of these areas that will help move you towards your overall focus. If you focus on too many things at a time, you're less likely to succeed.

Break Down Your Goals on a Quarterly Basis

At the beginning of each quarter, break down your annual goals into quarterly goals. Think about what you can do this quarter to help you move towards your overall focus.

Break Down Your Goals on a Monthly Basis

Every month, look at your annual and quarterly goals and turn these into monthly goals that may feel more like action items at this stage. What are you doing this month to move closer to achieving your overall goals? Don't feel like you need to have a goal in each of these areas every month.

Assess Your Goals

Goals can change based on our growth. If your goals change or you accomplish them early simply realign and update these worksheets. At the end of each month, quarter, and year revisit these sheets and ask yourself the following questions:
  • Do these goals align with my overall focus?
  • Are these goals still important to me?
  • Am I working towards these goals?
  • Do I need to break these down into smaller pieces?
  • Are these goals really what's most important to me?
  • Do I have all the resources and support I need to accomplish these goals?
  • Celebrate

Treat yo' self for all of your successes! As we meet our goals it's important to take time to really celebrate our accomplishments. However you choose to celebrate make sure it's rewarding for YOU! Sometimes, determining our celebrations ahead of time can even help us meet our goals.
